Preview - Long Distance Qualification Race
Saturday, 8 July 2006
The Long distance qualification map, Lehmonharju, is described as having steep ridges and dry forest. Rideability is said to be very good however there are sections of sandy ground. The height difference between the lowest and highest points on the map is just 40m.
The 16km women's course has an expected winning time of 60 minutes. Climb is estimated at 390m. 13-15 controls. The men will ride 20km with 470m of climb. Expected winning time is 65 minutes. 17-19 controls. In the men's race there is one map change. They will get both maps at the start of the race. Competitors will be starting at 2 minute intervals. They will be using the Emit punching system. A new experience for some members of the Australian team; hopefully they have had some practice in the last couple of weeks.
The weather forecast for Sunday looks good for racing with temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees between 9am and midday anticipated. The Start list for the Qualification race will be available late Saturday.
