Polish 7 days - Day 1

Tuesday, 17 July 2007

According to the internet it was about 37 degrees today.  So quite hot.  Not hot like in Australia hot, but probably like about 30 degrees at home.  The sun just isn't as intense here.

Anyhow we kicked off Polish 7 days with a sprint event this morning (Monday our time) and a relay this afternoon.  Given we have an ultra long distance World Ranking Event tomorrow we weren't pushing it too hard.  The main aim of the day was just to turn the legs over and get some flow going.  That is, finding check points nice and smoothly.  Keeping our heads in front of our legs.

The sprint was just around where we're staying and was a 25 minute course.  Paul was 4th and Alex 6th with Dave only a short way behind.  After a hot lunch, which caused us to sweat more than the race, it was time for the relay.

We rode, Paul, Dave, Alex.  Or at least that was the intended order.  Dave was still out warming up (in this weather?!? )when Paul finished first.  Fortunately Alex was taking pictures at the finish and quickly became 2nd leg rider, extending the lead to nearly 5 minutes.  This time Dave was ready and also rode quite fast ending up in a sprint for first with Tonis Erm, the #1 ranked rider in the world.  Unfortunately Dave missed a check point, but we made him pay for his sins by buying us all dinner.

All in all a great day in the forest and we look forward to the WREs tomorrow and Thursday.
